The Ceremonies

The main graduation events are Commencement and Convocation. There are two commencement ceremonies — one for undergraduates and one for graduate students. While Commencement is university-wide, Convocation is specific to New College.

All graduates and their families are welcome to attend both events. Tickets are not required. Graduates must wear an official ASU cap and gown (available at the ASU bookstore).

Undergraduate Commencement

ASU President Michael Crow will confer degrees upon all undergraduate students.

*Graduates must check-in one hour before the ceremony begins.

Transportation Option: ASU New College graduates and their families are invited to board a motor coach at the West campus for travel to the ASU Undergraduate Commencement at Wells Fargo Arena. It's free to ride the motor coach, but reservations are required and must be made by TBA through the Marching Order RSVP site. The motor coach will leave the West campus two hours prior to the ceremony, and will return to the West campus 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Commencement ceremony. New College Convocation

Held at the Peoria Sports Complex (located just 5 miles from ASU's West campus at 83rd Ave. and Bell Rd.), convocation is a celebratory ceremony in which students will be individually recognized by Vice Provost and Dean Todd Sandrin and the school directors for their educational achievements.

Key Convocation Information

  • You must arrive by 5:00 p.m. to check in at the Peoria Sports Complex. Staff will be on-site to direct you where to go upon arrival.

  • You must wear your cap and gown. Any academic honors cords may be worn over the graduation gown. (Honors cords can be picked up at the registrar’s office one business day prior to the ceremony.)

  • When you check-in, you will receive your name card with the information you provided to during your online RSVP. During the ceremony you will give this card to the Faculty Marshal, who will read your name as you cross the stage. After you check-in you also will be told where to line up.

  • Each graduate will walk up to the stage and present the name card to the Faculty Marshal, receive the diploma cover, shake hands with the Vice Provost and Dean and others, cross the stage and return to your seat.

ASU Bag Policy and Prohibited Items

Only the following items will be permitted upon entrance at convocation at the Peoria Sports Complex. You will not be allowed to enter the complex with any items not listed below, so please leave them in your car or at home.

  • Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12"
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)
  • Small clutch bags (no larger than 4.5" x 6.5") with or without a handle or strap can be taken into the venue
  • Medically necessary items after proper inspection at gates
  • Factory sealed water bottles 51 oz. / 1.5 liters or smaller
  • Empty non-disposable plastic water bottles • Small retractable umbrellas
  • Umbrella strollers
  • Service animals
  • Seat cushions and chair backs must be 18" or less in width (No pockets, zippers, compartments, or covers)

Graduation Day Flowers

Leis and bouquets will be sold at the convocation ceremonies.  Students and guests are encouraged to pre-order for pick up before the ceremony so they can wear their leis on stage and in pictures.  Click HERE to access Graduation Day Flowers' pre-order page!
