Community and Culture

ASU’s West Valley campus was established with a commitment to serve the diverse communities of the West Valley and Arizona. For 20+ years, award-winning annual cultural events MLK March and Pioneer Award Dinner brought tens of thousands of community members to campus to learn, engage and celebrate. They provide the community and ASU’s students, faculty, and staff with opportunities to learn about and experience distinct cultures and traditions. These community events are based on ASU’s charter, steeped in its commitment and responsibility for the economic, social, and cultural health of the communities we serve. MLK March and Pioneer Award Dinner are integral to ASU’s West Valley campus’ commemoration of Black History Month during February. We invite the public to join in the celebration!

MLK March on West

An annual tradition at ASU’s West Valley campus that dates back to 1991, reaching middle school students, members of the ASU community and the public to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and to understand the history-changing 1963 March on Washington. This in-person event will include educational presentations about the history of the civil rights movement, a musical program and an inspirational rendition of the “I Have a Dream” speech by ASU faculty member Charles St. Clair.

Pioneer Award Dinner

The Pioneer Award Dinner is a multicultural event that brings families and people of all ages together during Black History Month to break bread, enjoy art and music and celebrate community service. The Pioneer Award is presented to a community member who has made significant contributions to the life and culture of African-Americans in the Phoenix metropolitan area. In addition, a Student Pioneer award is given to an exemplary ASU student who serves the community. Traditional African attire is encouraged as African traditions are incorporated into the event.
