Stop 5

Paley Gates

Stop 5 transcript

Now it is time we come to a stop on campus that’s rich with tradition. The University Gates were designed by Albert Paley, which is why we here at ASU West know them as the Paley Gates. The Golden Tradition happens in the first week of school for first-year students as they line up and walk through the gates, touching the gates in turn. Students have made a habit to not to enter or exit the gates again until they complete their journey at ASU and the graduating class is invited to process through the gates as they exit.

Just to my right sits the Bool Bell, donated to the West campus in 1983 and was named for the couple who donated it, Herb and Betty Bool. On an average day, the bell sits untouched until a student has finished their last final at ASU, completing the final course of their senior year and they ring the Bool Bell. During finals week students can walk the campus and listen to the bell being rung, knowing that with each ring a different student has finished their academic journey at ASU.

Located just three feet from Bool Bell is a time capsule that was buried April 22, 1994. The tradition is that the time capsule will be opened in 2034 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the West campus.

And finally, take some time for walking through the Paley Gates if you haven’t had the chance yet, or even ringing the Bool Bell if you’re finished with your last final! Take some pictures by the Arizona State University sign, a rare sight to see, as it’s one of the only ASU signs that spells out the university's entire name. We hope you’ve enjoyed your guided tour at ASU West and that you get to participate in some of our fondest traditions!

We’ll see you back at the starting point for more fun and activities as we celebrate your accomplishments!
