Students are encouraged to utilize the following resources to secure an internship placement:

Psychology Internships

Ppsychology internships are designed for students with career interests in working in behavioral and mental health, education, or social work/services fields. Internship sites may include those serving individuals with serious mental illness; crisis stabilization; refugees suffering from trauma; children with autism spectrum disorders; hospice and bereavement; addiction and recovery; early childhood intervention; youth and family services; probation; and school settings working with school psychologists or occupational therapists.

Psychology students (or those in a related discipline) have multiple options for pursuing direct-professional experience for academic credit. One such option, PSY 494 Professional Field Experience, provides an opportunity for students to apply psychological principles to real-world settings and to cultivate experiential knowledge of agencies and other institutions that can help inform academic and career trajectories. This 3-credit course is taught by ASU Psychology faculty, and includes a field placement component, requiring a minimum of 40 field placement hours. To learn more about this course, please self-enroll in our PFE preparation space to determine if PFE is a good fit for you. For questions, please email Dr. Laura Petrolle Clemons (lpetroll@asu.edu).

Psychology students (or those in a related discipline) may also apply for the more traditional PSY 484 or 584 Internship course. Students seeking 484/584 internships are required to complete a minimum of 45 site hours per 1 academic credit hour, as well as assignments in the PSY 484/584 class (e.g. weekly time logs, reflective journals, supervisor evaluations, etc.). Most students pursuing this option complete 3 credit hours, equivalent to 135 site hours over the semester or session. Students interested in this option should review the New College internships website and contact Diane Mallory, Internship Manager, at ncinternships@asu.edu for questions. The Professional Field Experience class (PFE) may be a good preparatory course and/or lead to more full-time internships for the PSY 484 Internship course.

Recommended Internship Timeline

Internships vary considerable in the lead-time needed to confirm the position. Note: Most government (local, state, and federal) agencies require at least 60 days to process new hires.

  • After you have received an internship offer, submit an Experience application in Handshake to begin the process for receiving academic credit. If you have questions about the Experience application, please contact the New College internship manager, Diane Mallory, at ncinternships@asu.edu
  • Final deadlines for paperwork and enrollment:
    • Deadlines are for submission of all paperwork for new placement sites. All students interested in an internship after deadline will need to intern with existing New College Community Partners. Note: The Washington Center and Pre-Health internships may have different deadlines and application procedures.
