Internship site requirements

Because internships are an extension of the classroom experience, students enrolled for credit must meet certain academic and safety standards.

The goal of an internship is to create a meaningful learning experience where students can:

  • Apply classroom knowledge in a professional environment
  • Gain insight into multiple aspects of an organization
  • Acquire industry-specific knowledge
  • Develop key career competencies essential for professional success

To ensure a high-quality experience, internship sites are expected to provide orientation, training, supervision, evaluation, and relevant learning opportunities throughout the internship period.

Upon hire, employers should work collaboratively with their interns to establish clear goals that align both with organizational needs and the student’s academic and professional development objectives. Internship responsibilities should be primarily educational in nature and should not exceed 20% clerical or administrative work.

As part of the internship approval process for academic credit, the site supervisor will be asked to sign a University-wide Internship Application (UIA) confirming the details of the position and learning objectives. In some cases, a Student Placement Agreement between ASU and the internship site may also be required before the student can begin working.

All paperwork must be completed and approved before a student starts their internship for academic credit.

Site supervisors play an important role in supporting interns as they integrate academic learning with workplace experience. Supervisors are expected to:

  • Help interns create a work schedule that allows them to complete the required hours for academic credit (approximately 45 working hours = 1 academic credit hour).
    • For example, a 3-credit internship typically requires about 8–10 hours of work per week during a 16-week semester.
  • Review and sign weekly time-sheets to verify hours worked.
  • Complete two performance evaluations — one at mid-semester and one at the end of the semester — using the official intern performance evaluation form. Supervisors should discuss the evaluation results and overall performance with the intern prior to submission.

By providing intentional guidance and mentorship, internship sites play a vital role in helping New College students gain the experience, confidence, and professional skills they need to excel in their future careers.
