Internships for New College students

Faculty information

Overview

New College follows a centralized internship model for most internship placements. Under this model, the New College internship manager coordinates the majority of 484 and 584 internship courses, ensuring a consistent, compliant, and well-supported experience for all students.

While internship sites and specific duties may vary, all New College students enrolled in the 484 or 584 internship course complete the same core curriculum across all prefixes. This shared coursework emphasizes professional development, self-reflection, and connecting internship experiences to students’ academic programs, educational, and career goals.

For centralized internships, the internship manager:

  • Serves as the Instructor of Record (IOR)
  • Coordinates all required university documentation
  • Ensures students meet academic credit-hour requirements
  • Verifies that internship sites and duties comply with university, college, and program standards

Note: Some 484 and 584 courses are faculty-taught. These faculty-directed internship courses follow a different process, with the faculty member responsible for approvals, documentation, and reporting.

Partnering with faculty: A collaborative approach

Faculty partnership is central to the success of New College internships. The New College internship manager works closely with faculty to ensure that all internships align with program learning outcomes and uphold the academic expectations of the program.

  • Faculty play an essential role in reviewing and approving all internships before students can earn academic credit.
  • The internship manager collaborates with faculty leads and program directors to confirm that internship sites and duties meet academic and university standards.

Help us grow our network of internship partners.

When faculty have professional contacts or relationships with organizations interested in hosting New College interns, they are invited to connect those potential partners with Diane Mallory, internship manager. Partnering with new sites helps expand valuable, real-world learning opportunities for our students.

New College internship approval process (centralized internships)

The following process applies to New College 484 and 584 internship courses coordinated by the internship manager.

All approvals are submitted and managed through Handshake, the university’s platform for internships, jobs, and events.

Step-by-step process:

  • Students submit internship requests through Handshake.

  • Verifies that the internship site and description meet eligibility requirements
  • Confirms the proposed schedule meets ABOR credit-hour requirements and semester dates

  • Confirms the student meets 484 or 584 internship course prerequisites
  • Ensures the internship credit fits within the student’s academic plan

  • Faculty lead or program director receives an email notification from Handshake with a link to the request
  • Faculty provide final academic approval in Handshake, confirming the internship:
    • Offers meaningful, college-level learning opportunities
    • Aligns with program academic objectives

Tip: Faculty should check spam/junk folders if the Handshake approval notification is not received.

  • Following faculty approval, the internship manager completes and coordinates all required documentation (e.g., UIA, SPA)

Faculty-directed experiential learning

Documentation and reporting requirements

Some internships and experiential learning opportunities are faculty-directed, including (but not limited to) faculty-taught 484 and 584 internship courses, service learning, research, field experiences, faculty-directed study abroad, and domestic field trips.

Faculty-directed experiential learning may be subject to university documentation and compliance requirements, which vary based on the type and location of the experience. New College faculty involved in these activities are responsible for ensuring that all required university procedures and documentation are completed. This applies to any experience offered for academic credit, in any modality (in-person, virtual, or hybrid).

The Office of Risk Management periodically requests information about Out-of-State Learning Placements (OOSLP). Faculty who coordinate or supervise out-of-state experiences may be contacted to provide data for reporting and compliance purposes.

New College faculty seeking guidance on documentation or compliance requirements are encouraged to contact the New College internship manager or the New College state authorization liaison. These offices can assist in determining the correct forms, approvals, and university contacts for each type of experience.

For faculty-directed internship experiences, the University-wide Internship Application (UIA) and/or Student Placement Agreement (SPA) are still required and are managed by Diane Mallory, internship manager.
