Plan of Study (iPOS)

What is the Interactive Plan of Study (iPOS)?

The Interactive Plan of Study (iPOS) functions as an agreement between the student, the academic unit, and the ASU Graduate College. It will support you as you make progress toward your degree requirements. (Learn More)

The iPOS allows you to plan for your course load, can guide registration each term, and provides an anticipated timeline for degree completion.

How do I select courses for my iPOS?

At the time of admission to a graduate program in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences students are provided with a sequence of courses for the first semester and then work closely with the staff and faculty advisors to determine a successful path to degree completion.

How to create an iPOS?

To access the iPOS: Login to My ASU. From the My Programs box, under the Programs tab, select iPOS. Select Graduate Interactive Plan of Study (iPOS). Note: Pop up blockers may need to be turned off.  You will find instructions for submitting the iPOS in the downloadable how-to guide.

Individualized Instruction Form

Advanced students in the MS Psychology (Sport Psychology) campus program with specialized and well-developed topics may choose to take PSY 580; Practicum, PSY 590: Reading and Conference, or PSY 592: Research as an individualized instruction course, working with a faculty member independently.  Please refer to the MS Psychology (Sport Psychology) Program Handbook for additional policies.

After consulting with the faculty member with whom you want to work, please complete the Online Individualized Instruction Form. After completing the form, it may take several days to receive the line number to register.

Please submit the request to complete an individualized instruction course two weeks prior to the start of any academic semester.

Internships

If you are interested in completing an internship (584) for academic credit, please follow the below steps:

  1. Contact your graduate academic advisor at NCGradAdvising@asu.edu to confirm the internship meets your program’s degree requirements.

  2. Then, contact NCInternships@asu.edu to learn more about securing an internship and enrolling for graduate credit hours.

  3. After you have received the course permission override to enroll in the 584 course:
    a) register for the class as soon as possible;
    b) email NCGradAdvising@asu.edu to update the iPOS on your behalf (if the credits will be used toward your graduate degree requirements).

Summary of Culminating Experience

The MS Psychology (Sport Psychology) campus program requires PSY 553 Capstone in General Psychology, 3 credit hours to satisfy the culminating experience requirement.  At this point, you should be in your final term of the program, and you should be prepared to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you have gained. This course will be somewhat different from your previous work. You will be given a set of 10 readings addressing current research and methods in psychology to assist in designing your own capstone paper topic. You will meet with the instructor to discuss possible topics during the second week of the course and get approval on a topic. Then, you will be asked to produce a list of 10-15 contemporary readings related to your approved topic, followed by a 15-page paper that synthesizes the research in your chosen area and demonstrates your understanding of and ability to apply that research. In your paper, you must also propose a research study to address an unanswered question or gap in the literature of the chosen topic. [Note: The topic chosen must be related to a novel problem within the field of sport psychology.]

This course is designed as an independent-study course and project preparation - there are no lectures/PPT slides/videos or group discussions. Students are expected to work by themselves and receive feedback from the instructor on their outlines.

Capstone Course Eligibility and Registration

The capstone course is completed in a student’s final semester of study.  To be eligible for an override to enroll in the culminating experience a student must:

  • Have an approved iPOS with no course errors
  • Resolve all items listed under Priority Tasks affecting registration in the My ASU Portal
  • Meet the minimum 3.00 GPA in each Plan of Study GPA, Overall Graduate GPA, Cumulative GPA.
  • If one or more of the GPAs is below the required minimum and can increase to a 3.00 with successful completion of the capstone, registration will be permitted.
  • If a student becomes ineligible before the start of the culminating experience they will be removed from the course by New College Graduate Student Services.

Prior to registration a student who is issued an override will receive an email with the appropriate section line number. If a student does not meet eligibility requirements as outlined above they will need to contact NCGradAdvising@asu.edu.

If you have any questions or concerns not related to applications or general program requirements, please contact Dr. Hall at MSPsychDirector@asu.edu.
