Asylum in the US: Changing Landscapes and Emerging Issues in US Immigration
September 8 | ASU California Center, Los Angeles | Zoom (link provided upon registration)
Asylum representation and advocacy at the U.S. Mexico border, within the U.S., and immigration courts, are all facets of a complex and changing immigration landscape in the United States. This workshop, co-organized by ASU’s Social Justice and Human Rights program, the Global Human Rights Hub Migration Working Group, and the non-profit organization Sanctuarium, features panel discussions with leaders of more than a dozen immigration and refugee service provider organizations in the Southern California region to discuss legal and humanitarian services, representation and expert witness support, and policy reform. ASU faculty researchers Allan Colbern and Tricia Redeker Hepner, with Sanctuarium founder and Executive Director Hera Jay Brown, will facilitate networking, collaboration, research, and advocacy opportunities guided by participating organizations’ expertise. The event, held at the ASU California Center in downtown Los Angeles, coincides with the launch of Colbern’s U.S. Immigration and Citizenship Research Lab and will engage MA SJHR student attendees in research, analysis, and community engagement.
The event is the first in a series of three locally focused workshops held in LA, Boston, and Chicago funded by a grant to Sanctuarium’s board members from the Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund and co-sponsored by ASU’s Social Justice and Human Rights Program, Global Human Rights Hub, and the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Participating organizations in the LA workshop include Southern Borders Communities Coalition, San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium, CHIRLA, Immigrant Defense Advocates, Immigrant Legal Resource Center, Immigrant Defenders Law Center, and the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, UC Hastings.
