For the 2020-2021 academic year, all freshman will be reading “Designing your life” by Dave Evans and Bill Burnett. The book will be distributed the first week of class in the freshman.
Entering its 12th year, the ASU Common Read is a West campus tradition that connects all incoming first-year student. Students read and create a response to the text over the first part of fall semester, creating a commonality among all incoming ASU West campus students. In November of 2020, students will attend a guest speaker event related to the book. Surrounding this event there will be opportunities to present work that relates to the reading.
This year’s selection, Designing Your Life asks the question, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” is one that never truly goes away. No matter where you are in the journey, the search for a fulfilling life never stops. Dave Evans and Bill Burnett teach audiences how to look at career and life planning through the lens of design. Participants are given the tools to build their way forward and to develop various life scenarios just like a designer tests multiple prototypes. This approach fosters creativity and adaptability and allows audiences to accept that there is never just one right path.
Bill Burnett is an award-winning Silicon Valley designer and the Executive Director of the renowned Design Program at Stanford University. He is the co-author of Designing Your Life, an empowering book that shows people of any age how to design a life in which they can thrive. A thoughtful and motivational speaker, Burnett emphasizes actionable tools in his lectures and workshops.
After years as a successful tech exec at Apple and Electronic Arts, Dave Evans came to realize that his real mission in life was to help others find theirs. Today he teaches Life Design at Stanford University and is the co-author of Designing Your Life. Evans' lectures are transformative for both college students and executives, inspiring them to view life not as a problem that needs to be solved, but as a creative adventure.
