The Spanish program offered at ASU’s West campus emphasizes the Spanish language, literature and culture, developing students to be bi-lingual and versatile team members in social agencies, education, law, and diplomacy.

To know another language is to know another culture and be able to communicate with a multitude of different people. Spanish has the second most native speakers in the world and has more than 500 million total speakers worldwide. This program strengthens your career potential by making you more adept at navigating cultural practices.


The BA program in Spanish emphasizes language studies and examines the cultural production of Spanish-speaking communities, in Spanish.

This program provides students with the skills to communicate confidently in both a written and oral form. Students learn the history, arts, literature and cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. Graduates are prepared for graduate study, specialized professional training, government careers and commercial and international careers.

Required Courses

A major map outlines a major's critical requirements, courses, and optimal course sequence and aids students in remaining on track to graduation.

While circumstances vary between students and their paths towards graduation (utilizing placement testing to fulfill required math or foreign language courses, fulfilling multiple General Studies requirements with one course, etc.), completing the courses listed in a major map fulfills all of the requirements for graduation.

Financial Aid
ASU has many financial aid options. Almost everyone, regardless of income, can qualify for some form of financial aid. In fact, more than 70 percent of all ASU students receive some form of financial assistance every year.

Career outlook

The Spanish program offers excellent preparation for graduate school or for employment as a teacher in the elementary or secondary school system, especially in those districts where bilingual programs are integral to the curricula. Outside the education system, students majoring in Spanish find employment as translators and interpreters in:

  • diplomatic corps
  • federal and state courts
  • law enforcement agencies
  • law firms
  • social agencies

The business world also provides employment for those fluent in Spanish. This is especially true in the American Southwest, with its proximity to Mexico and through outlets opened by multinational trade agreements.
