Nicholas Duran
Biography
Nicholas Duran is an associate professor in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. He is also an affiliated faculty member of the cognitive science area of the Department of Psychology at ASU. He holds a doctorate in cognitive psychology from the University of Memphis and received postdoctoral training from the University of California, Merced.
Duran studies complex cognitive processes as revealed in the dynamics of movement and language, both within individuals and across dyads and groups. This line of work is currently being pursued in a number of ways, including the analysis of reaching movements during decision tasks, to interpersonal coordination dynamics in communicative contexts (with a focus on continuous "micro-behaviors" and speech). Major areas of research include deception and hidden biases, social perspective-taking, and collaborative problem-solving. He also has a wide range of interests that span the connection between language and action, cognitive dynamics, and theoretical cognitive science. In his research, he also uses a range of techniques such as computer-mouse tracking, motion capture, acoustic analysis, physiological sensing, nonlinear time series analyses and discourse modeling.
