The minor in mathematics explores the study of higher mathematics. It is designed to enable the student to understand the mathematics most commonly used in business, economics and science.

It is expected that students in the minor will be able to reason and to find creative solutions to problems that are either presented to them or meaningfully formulated by them.

The program is offered by the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences.

Financial Aid
ASU has many financial aid options. Almost everyone, regardless of income, can qualify for some form of financial aid. In fact, more than 70 percent of all ASU students receive some form of financial assistance every year.

Program requirements

The minor in mathematics consists of 20 credit hours (a minimum of 12 credit hours must be upper division). A minimum of nine upper-division credit hours must be taken from the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. Elective courses not on this list should be approved by an academic advisor prior to enrollment. All courses used to satisfy requirements for the minor must be passed with a "C" (2.00) or better.
Core Requirements -- 14 credit hours
Upper-Division Elective Courses (choose two courses) -- 6 credit hours
Depending on a student's undergraduate program of study, prerequisite courses may be needed in order to complete the requirements of this minor.

Degree requirements

The minor in mathematics consists of a minimum of 27 credit hours, of which nine credit hours must be taken from the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences.

Elective Courses:

Choose three electives from the following courses or from other approved courses, in consultation with a departmental advisor, for a total of nine credits.

Depending upon a student's undergraduate program of study, prerequisite courses may be needed in order to complete the requirements of this minor.

The minor in mathematics is open to all ASU undergraduate majors.

Current ASU undergraduate students may pursue a minor and have it recognized on their ASU transcript at graduation. Students interested in pursuing a minor should consult their academic advisor to declare the minor and to ensure that an appropriate set of courses is taken. Minor requirements appear on the degree audit once the minor is added. Certain major and minor combinations may be deemed inappropriate by the college or department of either the major program or the minor. Courses taken for the minor may not count toward both the major and the minor. Students should contact their academic advisor for more information.

Career outlook

The minor is recommended for students who plan to major in interdisciplinary arts and sciences, biology or business and for those who are preparing for further graduate study.
