If New York is the city that never sleeps at night, then the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences is the college that never naps. Since the last edition of what’s new, New College students, faculty and staff have been busy making news and helping to shine an even brighter spotlight on ASU, the West campus and the college.

Prof earns “Outstanding Mentor” honors:
Peter Jurutka, an associate professor in the New College Division of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, has earned top faculty honors for his excellence in mentoring undergraduate students. Read more…
Hot coursework: History, biology, political science, philosophy and mathematics are just a few of the topics addressed in more than 100 New College summer classes. Multiple summer school sessions will be offered this year, with most classes offered during two five-week sessions.

Teaching fellows announced: Questions related to ethical inquiry will permeate several new and revised New College courses during the 2011-12 academic year. Six faculty members have been selected as Lincoln New College Ethics Teaching Fellows through a collaborative program with ASU’s Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics. Establishment of the Lincoln Center Teaching Fellows program within New College coincides with a major initiative in the college to redesign its general education curriculum. Read more…
BS in stats debuts this fall: A recent New York Times technology article featured the headline, “For Today’s Graduate, Just One Word: Statistics.” Starting with the Fall 2011 semester, university students in Arizona will have the opportunity to pursue a first-time New College bachelor of science degree in statistics. The program encompasses both theoretical and applied statistics, with an emphasis on computer-based statistical analysis. Read more…
“Cleaning up” Alzheimer’s: What if you could turn on a “vacuum cleaner” and remove molecules associated with Alzheimer’s disease from the brain? That’s essentially what New College professors Carl Wagner and Peter Jurutka are exploring – with a little help from a $750,000 grant from the Thome Memorial Foundation. Read more…
