Social Justice and Human Rights

Program Requirements

Full-time students can complete the MASJHR degree within 18 months. The program is structured so that current practitioners in NGOs and other non-traditional students are able to complete their degree requirements by spending two semesters on campus and completing the remainder of their degree requirements (individualized instruction, thesis credits, etc.) back at their place of work in whatever location or country that may be. The remaining coursework can be completed via a summer internship, and a semester off campus to complete their capstone experience in the field. We also expect many students to remain on campus for their entire program of study.

The MASJHR consists of 33 hours of coursework:

  • 15 hours of core courses
  • 6 hours in one of the career-oriented tracks:
    • Non-Governmental Organization Management OR
    • Social Justice and Human Rights Research
  • 6 hours of electives
  • 3 hours as an internship
  • 3 hours as a capstone project

For their capstone project students will work with a faculty member to develop a thesis/capstone topic from previous coursework. Capstone projects could include; traditional thesis, legal brief, drafting of legislation or policy, developing strategic plans for community organizations, public art displays, etc.
