Career Outlook

A degree in Life Sciences provides broad training in laboratory, data-gathering, writing, communication, quantitative, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills that prepare students for a wide variety of careers. Graduates enter laboratory or field research, business, scientific journalism, publishing, teaching and medicine.

Laboratory technician or research associate positions are available in university and government research laboratories, hospital and diagnostic laboratories, and pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agricultural, and food-processing companies. Laboratory experience at the undergraduate level, available in laboratories on and off campus, further enhances employability.

Students who emphasize field studies prepare themselves for entry-level positions in private companies, as well as state and federal agencies. Those positions include wildlife biologist, environmental consultant and conservation officer. Participation in internships in government agencies or private companies as an undergraduate provides experience valuable to potential employers.

This degree is also appropriate for students who want to enter master's and doctoral programs in basic or applied areas of biology.
