Core course descriptions

MAS 502 - Perspectives On Interdisciplinary Studies
This course is a graduate-level introduction to interdisciplinary study through the exploration of theoretical and methodological practices that bridge traditional disciplines. Course Objectives:

  • Acquaint students with the principles of interdisciplinarity that will help them develop their graduate program of study;
  • Extend student’s knowledge and practices of graduate-level research;
  • Strengthen student’s graduate-level writing skills;
  • Further develop critical thinking skills;
  • Aid in the student’s intellectual growth.

MAS 501 - Models of Inquiry for Contemporary Issues
This course provides students with a critical survey of current models of inquiry, tools, processes, and methods in different fields. While this course will introduce you to practical quantitative and qualitative strategies in carrying out research across interdisciplinary fields, we will also critically examine currently contested theoretical/methodological issues, particularly reconceptualizations of “ways of knowing” contributed by feminists, critical race theorists, queer theorists, and postcolonial theorists.

MAS 505 - 20th Century Thought Change, Culture, and Mind
This course investigates a selection of writings grouped loosely under the heading of ‘theory’—writings that have challenged and reoriented how we think about change, culture, and mind over the last century. Theory includes discourses ranging from anthropology to sociology, from art history to science studies, from linguistics to political theory, from philosophy to psychoanalysis; but while its questions are often linked to particular disciplines, the writing we call theory has been evocative for scholars across the disciplines. This course allows students to practice, in a more general sense, the skills necessary to thinking, reading, and expressing oneself as a reflective and enfranchised citizen.
