The Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences
cordially invites you to attend a research presentation by
Professor Mary Gauvain
Professor of Psychology, UC Riverside
“Contributions of Child Age and Societal Modernity to Cognitive Development: A Comparison of Four Cultures”
Dr. Gauvain’s research investigates how social and cultural processes affect children’s acquisition, organization, and use of cognitive skills. The fundamental research question she addresses is: “How do children grow up to be competent members of the community in which they live?” To answer this question, Dr. Gauvain studies how children's experiences with other people and the tools of thinking available in their culture influences their cognitive development. Her book, The Social Context of Cognitive Development (2001), describes theory and research on social contributions to cognitive development in four areas - attention, memory, problem solving, and planning.
